I just returned from a weekend in my home state. You know you’re in Texas when…
There’s an announcement over the airport pa system informing folks where they can pick up their checked firearms.
There’s “sweet tea” offered everywhere you go.
Everyone calls you ma'am (or sir) no matter their age, or yours.
Biscuits & gravy and blue bell ice cream is a complete meal.
Here are my favorite Texas authors/books:
Molly Ivins–Read any one of Ivins’ books and you’ll get a taste of the whip smart banter I used to hear around my grandparents’ kitchen table over a game of dominoes.
Ann Richards: Let the People In–Richards is one of my heroes but this biography is a fascinating insider’s view of politics in general, and Texas politics specifically.
Mary Karr’s Liar’s Club– A beautifully written memoir of Karr’s 1960s childhood growing up in southeast Texas.
Larry McMurtry–Lonesome Dove. Possibly the greatest cowboy novel ever written.
Cormac McCarthy–Read anything by McCarthy. All the Pretty Horses, Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men. Tough. Haunting. Non-traditionally beautiful. Just like the Lone Star state.
